The Pennsylvania Society of Chaplains is an informal association of chaplains who serve hospitals and healthcare facilities. Although most members of the Society serve in Pennsylvania facilities, membership in the Society also is open to chaplains in adjacent states.
In 2002, the Society formally incorporated as a tax-exempt non-profit organization so that it might expand its mission and scope.
The Society has several purposes. Its primary purpose is to exchange and disseminate information concerning chaplaincy services in health care facilities and agencies, to offer an opportunity for the professional growth of chaplains, to develop and suggest minimum standards and sound practices for chaplaincy services and spiritual care in health care facilities and agencies and to promote cooperation and maintain communication with nationally recognized chaplaincy organizations.
To those ends, each year it sponsors two statewide educational conferences and/or retreats for chaplains. In addition to these, it sponsors regional educational gatherings for chaplains.
Another purpose of the Society is The Society has encouraged professional development and high standards through its association with national professional organizations. It has also encouraged research and the sharing of "best practices" so that those cared for by chaplains might receive the best care possible.
Another purpose of the Society is to promote the growth and recognition of spiritual care in health care facilities and agencies. The Society encourages dialogue with other health care providers, and includes them in its conferences and educational programs.
